Salicylic Acid in a Pimple Patch: What the Label Tells You
Salicylic Acid is a beta hydroxy acid, and it turns up in two very different kinds of patches. In an over-the-counter acne drug, it's the active ingredient, listed with its percentage in a Drug Facts panel, usually 0.5% to 2%. In a cosmetic patch like ours, it sits on the ingredient list at less than 0.5%, for cosmetic purposes only. The percentage is the whole story.
Quick Facts — Salicylic Acid
Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
What It Is | A beta hydroxy acid (BHA) |
In CLERIVY Patches | Less than 0.5%, for cosmetic purposes only |
Where It Appears | On the ingredient lists of both the Hydrocolloid Pimple Patch and the Microdart Spot Patch |
OTC Acne Drug Range | 0.5% to 2%, named in a Drug Facts panel |
Status | Cosmetic ingredient listing — not an over-the-counter drug active |
What Is Salicylic Acid?
A beta hydroxy acid (BHA on most labels), and one of the most familiar names in skincare. On an ingredient list, it goes by its own name: Salicylic Acid.
That single name leads two regulatory lives. In the U.S., a product becomes an over-the-counter acne drug when it's marketed to treat acne and carries an acne active ingredient under FDA rules. Outside that category, in a product that makes no drug claims, Salicylic Acid is simply a cosmetic ingredient. That's the category CLERIVY is in.
The paragraph above describes the category, not what Salicylic Acid does in a CLERIVY patch.
Why Does the Percentage Matter?
It's the one number worth checking on any patch box. At 0.5% to 2% with a Drug Facts panel, you're holding an OTC acne drug. Below that, you're holding a cosmetic, and the label has to say the ingredient is there for cosmetic purposes. Ours says it word for word: "This product contains less than 0.5% Salicylic Acid for cosmetic purposes only. It is not intended to treat, prevent, or cure acne or any other medical condition."
That sentence is printed on the Hydrocolloid Pimple Patch and Microdart Spot Patch cartons. It's the fastest honest answer to the question this page exists to answer.
How Much Salicylic Acid Is in CLERIVY Patches?
Less than 0.5%, on both the Hydrocolloid Pimple Patch and the Microdart Spot Patch. We print the name because it's in the formula, not because we're making a treatment claim.
On the Hydrocolloid Pimple Patch, it sits third on a seven-ingredient list: Polyisobutene, Cellulose Gum, Salicylic Acid, Phytosphingosine, Allantoin, Panthenol, Niacinamide. On the Microdart Spot Patch, it appears on a fifteen-ingredient list alongside 7% Niacinamide and 3% Tranexamic Acid, the two percentages we publish for that product.
There's one more place you'll find it. The Blemish Clearing Pad in the Microdart 2-STEP KIT lists Salicylic Acid among its six ingredients, and we haven't published a percentage for the pad. Where we can publish a number, we do. Where we can't yet, we say so rather than round it up into a headline.
How Do You Read Any Other Patch Box?
Three checks, ten seconds:
Is there a Drug Facts panel?
Is an active ingredient listed with a percentage?
Does the copy say "treats acne"?
Three noes mean you're holding a cosmetic. The longer version of this check, including what a cosmetic patch is and isn't allowed to say, is in Cosmetic Patch or Acne Drug? How to Read the Box.
What This Page Doesn't Claim
Nothing here tells you what Salicylic Acid will do for your skin in a CLERIVY patch — deliberately. What the ingredient is known for has been studied at other concentrations and in other formats, and we won't borrow those descriptions for a listing under 0.5%.
If what you want is an over-the-counter acne drug, a CLERIVY patch isn't one. Look for a box with a Drug Facts panel instead.
We publish exactly three percentages on this site: 7% Niacinamide and 3% Tranexamic Acid on the Microdart Spot Patch, and less than 0.5% Salicylic Acid.
